Former Brazilian central bank governor takes seat on advisory board
He also served as finance minister from 2011 to 2013
Enrique Meirellis supports cryptocurrencies but recognises the need for them to be controlled by the state
The former head of the financial regulator in Brazil, Henrique Meirellis, has joined the Binance team. The expert will take up an advisory role on the company’s advisory board.
The announcement was made by local news portal O Globo. Binance has confirmed Meirellis’ appointment, but did not disclose details regarding his work in the new position.
It is known that the former central bank governor will join the advisory board. It is possible that Meirellis will support the bourse on legal matters.
He headed the regulator from 2003 to 2011. He then served as the country’s finance minister for two years. Experts agree that Meirellis could return to office if Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva wins the next election.
He was also head of the São Paulo State Department of Finance. As for cryptocurrencies, Meirellis takes a cautious stance. He recognises the direction as promising, but also advocates comprehensive state control in this area.
“We want regulations to protect investors first and foremost,” Meirellis stressed in an interview with The Nation View.
At the same time, the former central bank governor urges investors to be cautious. He insists that investing in this segment should be a deliberate and carefully prepared move.
